About MOOCs

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are free online courses available for anyone to enroll. MOOCs provide an affordable and flexible way to learn new skills, advance your career and deliver quality educational experiences at scale.

Millions of people around the world use MOOCs to learn for a variety of reasons, including: career development, changing careers, college preparations, supplemental learning, lifelong learning, corporate eLearning & training, and more.

SWAYAM MOOCs platform is World’s Largest Online Free E-Learning Platform Portal initiated by Government of India and designed to achieve the three cardinal principles of Education Policy viz., access, equity and quality. The current SWAYAM platform is developed by Ministry of Education and NPTEL, IIT Madras with the help of Google Inc. and Persistent Systems Ltd.

The objective of this effort is to take the best teaching learning resources to all, including the most disadvantaged. SWAYAM seeks to bridge the digital divide for students who have hitherto remained untouched by the digital revolution and have not been able to join the mainstream of the knowledge economy.

Courses delivered through SWAYAM are available free of cost to the learners, however learners wanting a SWAYAM certificate should register for the final proctored exams that come at a fee and attend in-person at designated centres on specified dates. Eligibility for the certificate will be announced on the course page and learners will get certificates only if this criterion is matched. Universities/Colleges approving credit transfer for these courses can use the marks/certificate obtained in these courses for the same.

Credit Transfer

UGC has already issued the UGC (Credit Framework for onlinelearning courses through SWAYAM) Regulation 2016 advising the Universities to identify courses where credits can be transferred on to the academic record of the students for courses done on SWAYAM. AICTE has also put out gazette notification in 2016 and subsequently for adoption of these courses for credit transfer.

NPTEL Local Chapter

NPTEL has been offering self-study courses across engineering, humanities and science streams for more than a decade. These are available at: http://nptel.ac.in. From March 2014 NPTEL has been offering online certification for its courses, the highlight being the certification exam through which the student gets an opportunity to earn a certificate from the IITs!
These are available at:
 https://swayam.gov.in/NPTEL

To take forward and to encourage more students across colleges to participate in this initiative, SWAYAM-NPTEL has set up chapter in colleges (with the approval of the management) which will be under the headship of a faculty member of the college, who would be our Single Point of Contact (SPOC). The SPOC will keep updated about all the latest NPTEL initiatives and give him/her information which he/she can disseminate among the students. He/she can identify suitable mentors for various courses.

Our college has established SWAYAM-NPTEL Local Chapter in the year 2018. We encourage our students to enroll any SWAYAM-NPTEL courses of their own interest and insist them to get certification from IIT-Madras. Mentors are assigned to each course, who can ensure that students are active in a course, are submitting their assignments on time and also clarify the doubts they may have. Course developer assigns credits to the course and the same is transferred as an EXTRA CREDITS to the students those who have cleared the course successfully.

NPTEL Translators

Twenty of our faculty members acted as a translator for the courses offered by IIT-Madras and NCERT MOOCs, and translated into TAMIL language. Two of our faculty are acting as a Quality Controller for the NPTEL IIT-Madras.
